The performance problem

Understanding the operation before acting.

Traditional knowledge checks can confirm whether learners recognize an answer. They provide weaker evidence that someone can interpret a changing situation, prioritize competing demands, and make a sound decision.

Clear to Land was designed around a different question: can the learner build an accurate operational picture and act deliberately as conditions evolve?

  • Observe: gather information from weather, traffic, runway, and radio signals.
  • Interpret: connect individual updates into a coherent operational picture.
  • Prioritize: decide what deserves attention before it becomes urgent.
  • Act and reassess: make a decision, see its trade-offs, and keep monitoring.
