Companion to Learner Feedback Should Coach, Not Grade. Check whether your feedback actually helps learners understand their reasoning, recover from mistakes, and make better decisions next time.

The feedback explains why the answer is useful or risky It does more than say correct or incorrect. It helps the learner understand the reasoning behind the result. The feedback identifies the assumption behind the choice It points to what the learner may have believed, missed, overvalued, or misunderstood. The feedback coaches the next decision It helps the learner know what to notice, check, ask, pause on, or do differently next time. Correct feedback reinforces the decision pattern When learners get it right, the feedback explains what they noticed or prioritized so they can repeat the behavior. Incorrect feedback avoids shame and guessing loops It does not punish the learner or simply force another attempt. It helps them recover productively. The feedback connects to real work It links the answer back to a workplace situation, consequence, customer impact, risk, standard, or judgment call. The tone is direct without being punitive The feedback is clear and specific, but it does not talk down to the learner or make the learner feel tricked. The feedback is useful even when the learner guessed correctly It still reinforces reasoning and decision quality, not just answer accuracy.
