01 / Learning design

The work behind the course.

Learning design is bigger than selecting a template, choosing a model, or making content look good. These questions get at what the discipline is actually trying to accomplish.

What is instructional design?

Instructional design is the practice of designing experiences and support that help people learn, make decisions, and perform more effectively. Strong instructional design begins by understanding the performance need, audience, context, constraints, and available evidence before deciding what to build.

A course may be part of the answer. It is not automatically the answer.

What is the difference between instructional design and learning experience design?

The terms overlap. Instructional design often emphasizes analysis, objectives, practice, assessment, and structured learning. Learning experience design usually puts additional emphasis on the complete experience around the learner, including context, interaction, usability, emotion, environment, and the systems surrounding the learning.

In practice, strong professionals often draw from both rather than treating the labels as competing professions.

Do instructional designers need to use ADDIE?

No. ADDIE is a useful way to describe major phases of instructional design, but it is not a rulebook and it does not make decisions for the designer. Good work can be iterative, agile, product-oriented, systems-oriented, or use another framework entirely.

The more important question is whether the process helps you understand the problem, make informed decisions, build responsibly, and evaluate what happened.

Are learning objectives still useful?

Yes, when they clarify the capability learners need to develop and guide design decisions. They are less useful when they become formulaic sentences added to a slide because a template requires them.

Bloom’s Taxonomy can help a designer think about cognitive complexity. It does not need to become the voice used to speak to learners.

What makes a learning experience effective?

Effective learning aligns with a real need, gives people meaningful opportunities to think and practice, provides useful feedback, respects cognitive limits, connects to the context in which performance occurs, and includes reinforcement or support when the work demands it.

Visual polish can improve an experience. It cannot compensate for weak decisions underneath it.

02 / Performance

Training is one lever, not the whole machine.

A performance problem can look like a learning problem long before anyone has investigated what is actually happening.

When is training the right solution to a performance problem?

Training is appropriate when people lack knowledge, skill, judgment, or practice that is necessary for the expected performance. It is less likely to solve a problem caused primarily by unclear processes, missing tools, incentives, workload, access, policy, management, or environmental constraints.

What is performance consulting?

Performance consulting is the practice of investigating the gap between current and desired performance before prescribing an intervention. It looks at the business outcome, the people doing the work, the environment around them, root causes, evidence, constraints, and the range of possible solutions.

Why is completion rate not enough to prove training worked?

Completion tells you that an activity was finished. It does not tell you whether someone learned, transferred the learning to the job, changed behavior, improved performance, or contributed to a business outcome.

Completion can still be useful operational data. The mistake is treating activity as evidence of impact.

What is a learning system?

A learning system is the connected set of experiences, tools, practice, feedback, reinforcement, social support, performance support, and workplace conditions that help people develop and apply capability over time.

Learning rarely succeeds because of a single event. It succeeds because the right experiences work together.

What should happen before an instructional designer starts building?

The designer should understand what prompted the request, what people need to do differently, how success will be recognized, what evidence already exists, what constraints matter, and whether learning is actually capable of influencing the problem.

That discovery work is not a delay before design. It is design.

03 / Measurement

Impact should be designed in, not added later.

Better measurement starts before launch, when the team still has time to decide what evidence matters and how it will be collected.

How do you measure whether learning actually worked?

Start with the performance or business outcome the work is intended to influence. Then identify evidence at multiple levels, such as participation, learning, behavior or transfer, operational performance, and business results.

Measurement is strongest when the evidence plan is created before the learning solution is built, not after stakeholders ask for proof.

Is the Kirkpatrick model still useful?

Yes, if it is used as a planning and evidence framework rather than a checklist completed after launch. Its value increases when teams begin with the desired business and performance outcomes, determine what behavior would contribute to those outcomes, and then design the learning and evidence strategy around that chain.

What are vanity metrics in L&D?

Vanity metrics are numbers that can make learning activity look successful without showing whether anything meaningful changed. Common examples include registrations, completions, seat time, content counts, and satisfaction scores when they are reported without stronger evidence.

The metrics themselves are not useless. The problem is asking them to prove something they cannot prove.

How can L&D connect learning to business outcomes?

Begin with the business result, identify the human performance that contributes to it, determine which parts of that performance can realistically be influenced by learning, and agree on observable indicators before launch.

This creates a defensible chain from learning activity to behavior, performance, and business evidence without claiming that training caused outcomes it did not control.

04 / AI & Learning Rewired Intelligence

AI can accelerate the work. Judgment still matters.

Faster content generation changes the economics of production. It does not remove the need to decide what deserves to be produced.

Can AI replace instructional designers?

AI can accelerate research, drafting, analysis, prototyping, and production, but producing content is only part of learning design. Professional judgment is still required to diagnose performance problems, interpret context and evidence, make tradeoffs, design meaningful practice, evaluate risk, and determine whether learning is the right intervention.

How should instructional designers use AI?

Use AI where it increases thinking capacity or removes low-value friction. That might include exploring alternatives, summarizing inputs, stress-testing a recommendation, drafting scenarios, generating first-pass content, analyzing feedback, or accelerating repetitive production.

The designer remains responsible for context, accuracy, evidence, ethics, accessibility, and the final decision.

What is Learning Rewired Intelligence?

Learning Rewired Intelligence, or LRI, is the shared reasoning and intelligence layer behind the Learning Rewired Lab ecosystem. It combines research, evidence, professional practice, performance thinking, and learning science to support stronger learning design decisions.

LRI is not meant to replace professional judgment. It is designed to strengthen it.
