SMEs Should Review Decisions, Not Decoration

When experts review a polished course, feedback drifts toward wording, colors, and preference. Give them the decisions only they can validate.

A nearly finished course lands in the SME's inbox with a request to review everything. The reviewer comments on what is visible: a word, image, button, animation, or personal preference. Important questions about accuracy, consequence, exceptions, and realistic judgment compete with surface details.

01Name the problem

A nearly finished course lands in the SME's inbox with a request to review everything. The reviewer comments on what is visible: a word, image, button, animation, or personal preference. Important questions about accuracy, consequence, exceptions, and realistic judgment compete with surface details.

02Look at the real work

A useful review request tells the SME what to evaluate. Is the workflow accurate? Are the consequences realistic? Does the scenario include signals an expert would notice? Is an exception missing? It also tells them what has already been decided and why.

A better review process matches each reviewer to the decision they are qualified to make.

03Choose the right response

SMEs can validate a decision map, scenario outline, example, or rough prototype before production cost makes change painful. Early review exposes conceptual problems while the team is still willing to solve them. Review the thinking before asking people to inspect decoration.

04Protect the learner

Some feedback is mandatory because it protects accuracy, safety, compliance, or brand. Some is advice. Some is taste. Define who owns each type of decision before conflict appears. Clear decision rights keep collaboration from turning into a pile of contradictory edits.

05Make the decision visible

End each review round with resolved choices, named owners, and a record of what changed. Do not send the same broad request to twelve people and hope consensus emerges in the margins. SMEs help us get the work right. Designers help the learning response work.
