Learning Rewired Lab · Watch · Episode 003
Before you design, check your LMS.
Your delivery environment is part of the design. Ignore its limitations and even a great learning experience may need to be rebuilt.
Build for the place learning actually lives.
You can dream up a beautiful learning experience with video, interactions, branching, and simulations. Then somebody asks how it's going into the LMS, and the design falls apart. The file is too large. Tracking behaves strangely. Mobile looks different. Reporting can't capture what you need.
That's backwards. The LMS isn't just where you upload the finished product. Its capabilities and constraints influence what you should design in the first place.
Five things to investigate before building
- File size and formats. What can the platform accept and reliably deliver?
- Tracking. What completions, scores, interactions, or other signals can it actually record?
- Mobile behavior. Does your experience work in the environments learners will use?
- Reporting. Can you retrieve the evidence your stakeholders expect?
- Platform features. Are there native tools or delivery options that could improve your design?
Test the hard constraints early. A small experiment now can save you a huge rebuild later.
