The LMS Isn't Dead. But It's No Longer the Center of Learning.

The LMS still matters for assignment, records, and compliance. It fails when we ask it to become the front door to every moment of support.

People have been declaring the LMS dead for years. It is still here because organizations need assignments, completion records, permissions, reporting, and a reliable place for regulated learning.

01The death announcement is premature

People have been declaring the LMS dead for years. It is still here because organizations need assignments, completion records, permissions, reporting, and a reliable place for regulated learning.

Those jobs are not glamorous, but they are real. The problem is not that the LMS exists. The problem is that we keep treating it as the center of every learning experience.

02Work does not happen there

When someone is trying to complete a task, troubleshoot a tool, or make a judgment call, leaving the workflow to search a course catalog is usually a nasty experience. The learner has to remember where the resource lives, what it was called, and which module contains the answer.

That distance between the work and the support is where good intentions go to die.

The LMS is infrastructure. It should not be mistaken for the entire learning experience.

03Separate the system of record

Let the LMS do what it does well. Use it for required learning, formal pathways, durable records, and experiences that genuinely benefit from protected time and sequence.

Then design a broader ecosystem around it: searchable guidance, embedded support, practice environments, manager conversations, communities, and tools that appear close to the moment of need.

04Design the connections

A learning ecosystem becomes useful when the pieces connect. A course should link to the job aid people will use later. The job aid should point back to deeper practice when needed. Search terms should match the language people actually use.

The learner should not need an architecture diagram to figure out where to go.

05Change the center

The center of learning is not the platform. It is the work people are trying to do. Platforms should orbit that reality.

The LMS is not dead. It is simply one part of the system, and the moment we stop asking it to be everything, it becomes much easier to use well.
