Stop starting with training.

Somebody asks for a course. Before opening an authoring tool, there's a more useful question: what is stopping people from doing the job today?

Before you build, investigate.

We've all been there. Someone says, “We need training,” and suddenly we're discussing videos, interactions, and how long the course should be. But we haven't asked why people can't do the work right now.

Sometimes training is the answer. Sometimes the process is confusing, the tool gets in the way, or people need a quick reference while they're working. A beautiful course won't fix a broken workflow.

What to ask instead

  • What are people doing today, and what should they be doing?
  • What is getting in the way of performance?
  • Do they need practice, feedback, a better process, or support at the moment of need?
  • What happens three weeks later when they've forgotten the details?

Our job isn't simply to make courses. It's to help people perform. Start with the problem and let the solution earn its place.
